So you feel ready to move to the next group class level? It can be scary but thrilling at the same time!  Before you ask for an assessment and permission from your instructor to move to the next level, do a self-check:

  1. ✅ Mastering foundations:  I can consistently meet the expectations for timing and technique in my current level, both individually and in partnerwork.
  2. ✅ Social Dance Comfort: I can lead/follow moves comfortably and consistently on the social dance floor with dancers at the same (or higher) level.
  3. ✅ Core Move Mastery: I can name and execute core moves at this level without needing additional instruction or review.
  4. ✅ Move Recognition: I can recognize and replicate core moves at this level simply by watching them.

levelling up in partnerwork classes

In partnerwork classes, it's important to come with the right level of experience so everyone can enjoy the class and maximize the learning.

When you're moving up a level, it takes time to get used to the increased experience level and speed of learning, so initial challenges are normal.  But you have solid on timing, foundations and core movements, your partners won’t have to worry about (or be frustrated) keeping you on track and can focus on picking up new moves for their own learning.

This consideration helps everyone have a better experience, including you!

8 tips for levelling up like a champ

You’ve mastered your foundations and core movements, and you’ve received the green from your instructor to level up.  Congratulations!! Here’s some tips for a successful transition into the next level!

  1. Arrive on Time: Be one of the first to arrive to class, giving yourself time warm up, practice and meet other students.  Don't arrive late and ask what you missed.
  2. Solidify Foundations: Keep strengthening your basics and foundations in lower-level classes on a regular basis.  As a new dancer at this level, avoid slowing down the pace of the class with questions about basics/foundations that you are expected to already know.  Yay basics!!
  3. Embrace New Challenges: Be ready for new techniques, a faster pace, and higher complexity.   Approach these with a positive attitude and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone.  #yolo!
  4. Observe and Listen: If you're new to the level, watch and listen more than you speak. Get a feel for the class pace.  Give space to experienced students to ask questions so they can absorb the nuances and details the need to keep moving at their pace.  Use your eyes and experience to help you learn.
  5. Take Private Lessons:  If 1:1 attention could help you gain better self-awareness, improve or solidify specific skills and keep up with the class more confidently, consider booking a private lesson with your instructor to help expedite your progress AND so that you and your classmates can get the most out of group class learning!
  6. Practice Independently: Dedicate time outside of class to practice and reinforce what you’ve learned. Repetition is key to mastering new skills.
  7. Be Patient: Allow yourself time to adjust to the higher level. Don’t be discouraged if progress feels slow at the start.
  8. Remember to have fun: Don’t forget to smile and enjoy the wins when they happen!

Experienced dancers, be kind and patient as new dancers join. Remember, moving up a level means starting at the bottom. This will continue as we all progress, so it's essential to learn how to navigate through it. Balance eagerness to learn with self-awareness and humility.  As a newbie, put in the effort to earn your place so that you, your classmates and instructor, can get the most out of the class!

If you need advice on what you need to level up, speak with your instructor for some guidance on what to do next!
