Group Classes - Getting Started
No, partners are not required to participate in any course, open class or performance class.
Just bring yourself and get ready for some fun! We have helpers and assistants to help balance numbers.
Our classes are offered at two locations for your convenience. Our weekend classes are offered in Midtown Toronto at Yonge & Eglinton, at the Martha Hicks School of Ballet. Our weekday classes are held at our downtown location near John and Adelaide, at the Mad for Dance Studio.
If you have an irregular schedule and can’t commit to an 8-week course, you can still learn to dance! We have 2 options:
- Drop-in classes. Registration is not required, you can drop-in when you like, learn at your own pace and pay per class. Most students purchase a 6-class dance card that gives you a lower per class rate. Dance cards are valid for 6 months at that rate.
This is a great option for people who travel, work shifts or have unpredictable schedules.
- Private lessons: Our instructors are available for private instruction by appointment.
If you are unsure which class is appropriate for you, please contact us at (416) 669-1385 to discuss options or
to schedule a FREE assessment . Assessments usually take about 10 minutes.
Student sign up for a full session of classes. There is no refund or credit offered to students who miss class. Where a class is also offered on another day, you may make up a missed class there. Pleasecontact us to schedule that missed class. In some cases you can make up the class by coming in 15-30 minutes before the class to get caught up on the core material missed.
Some students who miss classes opt to book a private lesson or a make-up lesson. Please contact us at register@ifreestyle.ca or (416) 669-1385 for more details about private lessons.
The ratio of men to women tends to vary by class though we certainly do what is possible to even out the numbers. Registering for a class online helps us to better plan the balance of leaders and followers. Instructors are able to lead and follow, as well, student helpers are available to help with balancing out numbers.
Group Classes - Preparing for your first class
Latin Dance classes require a great deal of free movement, so please dress comfortably! Your best options are stretchy jeans, comfortable slacks or aerobic wear. Remember that you may sweat, so you want to make sure that you are wearing something breathable as well.
For your first classes, any shoes with non-rubber soles will work great. Rubber soled shoes can make it difficult to move and are not recommended. At some point many students choose to purchase dance shoes, and we can provide options for where to purchase these. Please note that during the winter, "outside" shoes are not permitted in the studio. Please bring another pair of shoes to wear during classes.
We highly recommend bringing your own bottle of water to keep hydrated during class. Salsa dancing is an active cardiovascular activity, so be prepared to sweat! Remember that Salsa is a partner dance, so please be considerate of other students and practice good hygiene.
Here are some items we suggest bringing with you to every class:
- Water Bottle
- Mints
- Deodorant
- Towel
- Body Spray
- Fresh Change of Clothes
- Please arrive about about 10 minutes before class to allow yourself time to change your shoes, stretch and get mentally prepared for some fun!
- Please keep turn your cell phones off OR put on vibrate during class time.
- Please wait outside of class until your instructor has opened the door to allow for your class to enter.
- Martha Hicks studio is a peanut-free environment. Please do not bring snacks that contain or may have come in contact with peanuts.
- There is no videotaping during classes.
